Madrid, July 16, 2021 -Forevery job created in the telco sector, 5.3 jobs are generated in other productive branches. This is one of the main conclusions of the report “Analysis of the impact of the telecommunications and audiovisual content sectors”, carried out by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure, and presented this morning in Madrid. The event was attended by the CEO of DigitalES, Víctor Calvo-Sotelo.

This is a comprehensive report that provides a detailed x-ray of the situation of two important sectors of the Spanish economy: the telecommunications sector and the audiovisual content sector. This document states that both industries, and especially the telecommunications industry, have a significant multiplier and drag effect on the main macroeconomic indicators (GDP, Gross Value Added, productivity, employment, etc.).

DigitalES telco employers

Of the results presented, the following stand out:

TELECOMMUNICATIONS

  • While its weight in the economy in terms of GVA and employment fell in recent years, its productivity rises from 2015, reaching in 2018 more than double that of the Spanish economy.
  • In the European context, in 2018 the Spanish sector leads productivity among the countries analyzed.
  • In terms of its internationalization, in 2017 the sector exported 0.44% of the total Spanish economy, and imported 0.56% of the total. By destination, its exports are distributed among EU countries (53.2%) and third countries (46.8%), more balanced than the national total (66.6% EU countries).
  • Its turnover is growing between 2016 and 2018. Cable telecommunications (53.0%) and wireless telecommunications (30.1%) account for 83.1% of the total. Even so, it remains below that of the other countries studied.
  • Despite the downward trend, turnover per employee in the Spanish sector remains above the rest.
  • 2.3% of the employment generated by the Spanish economy in 2018 depended directly or indirectly on telecommunications services, 891 jobs. Por every 100 jobs dedicated to telecommunications services, 532 additional jobs will be generated in other industries.
  • Postal and courier services is the first branch benefiting the most from telecommunications services activity, and the second is Other professional, scientific and technical services; veterinary services, impacting 11.24% of employment.
  • In number of companies it is growing steadily, and is the fastest growing with respect to the other countries (in 2018 only behind the UK).
  • Their composition: 91.5% are microenterprises, limited liability companies ( 59.1%), and belong to Other telecommunications activities (45.8%) and Cable telecommunications ( 39.1%).

AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT

  • Over the last 10 years, the weight of GVA and sectoral employment experienced moderate changes. Its productivity grew slightly, as did Spain’s, and was always higher.
  • In the European context, the weight of Spanish GVA was very close to the European average, only surpassed by Italy. In employment, it ranked second only to the United Kingdom.
  • The productivity of the two subsectors was below the European average, being the lowest among the countries analyzed.
  • In terms of its internationalization, the Film, video and television services; sound recording and music publishing subsector exported 0.47% of the national total in 2017 and imported 0.57%. On the other hand, the Radio and television programming and broadcasting services subsector recorded a 21.3% drop in its exports between 2016 and 2017, so that in 2017 they accounted for 0.06% of the total, and imports for 0.02%.
  • Turnover rose between 2016 and 2018. 47.7% contributed by the Activ. and 44.7% for Activ. and broadcasting of radio and television programming and broadcasting. In the European context, the subsectors rank among the lowest.
  • 1.0% of the employment generated by the Spanish economy in 2018 was related to the audiovisual content industry. For every 100 jobs generated in this sector, 186 additional jobs were created in other industries.
  • From the point of view of production value, the branches of activity that benefit most from the audiovisual industry are, in this order: Printing and reproduction services of recorded media“., “Advertising and market research services” y “Computer, electronic and optical products”. More than 5.5% of the production value of these branches originated in the activity generated indirectly by the audiovisual industry.
  • The net drop in the number of companies was due to losses in the Radio and Television Broadcasting and Programming Activities subsector.
  • Their composition: 91.1% are microenterprises, limited liability companies (60.7%) and belong to film, video and television program activities, sound recording and music publishing (83.7%).
  • In the case of Video Game Publishing: at the national level, between 2016 and 2018 it increased in number of workers and companies, in weight of value added and weight of employment over that of the Services sector, in turnover and gross operating surplus. On the other hand, the average number of employees per company, productivity and turnover per employee have evolved unfavorably.

New ENISA line of financing for startups

On the other hand, DigitalES was also present today at the presentation of ENISA’s new line of financing, aimed at digital entrepreneurs. The president of our employers’ association, Eduardo SerraThus, on behalf of the technology and digital innovation sector, he wished to lend his support to ENISA, to the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence and to the Vice-President for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviñowho gave the closing speech.
