September 8, 2022 – Spain is one of the European Union countries with the largest number of 5G pilot projects underway (16, only one behind Germany and far behind the rest of the member countries, according to the latest report from the European 5G Observatory). Testing use cases is the first step to speed up their development in strategic productive sectors such as industry, tourism or mobility.

This predominance of Spain in the experimentation of digital solutions on 5G infrastructures has been favored by the impulse of the Government, which through Red.es launched two calls for subsidies for a total value of 60 million euros. Information on the 10 winning projects can be found in the 5G Pilot Directory of DigitalES.

Now, the government has launched a new line of subsidies for the creation of prototypes, demonstrations, pilot development, testing and validation of 5G products. This is the UNICO Sectorial 5G program, whose call for applications closes today, September 8.

About UNICO Sectorial 5G

With a budget of 90.7 million euros, UNICO Sectorial 5G is aimed at companies and research and knowledge dissemination organizations whose main operational center is in Spain. In addition, the regulatory bases for the granting of these subsidies establish that the beneficiaries will have to create the necessary employment in Spain for the provision of the activity that is the object of the subsidy.

The projects financed will have a budget of between 3 and 15 million euros and may be developed individually or in cooperation. The 5G applications and services to be developed can be deployed on private networks, on a self-provisioned basis, on public or mixed networks.

The granting of this aid is part of the Recovery Plan and is aligned with the Digital Spain agenda and the strategy to promote the deployment of 5G launched by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure to make Spain one of the leading countries in the deployment of this technology.

New information space on UNICO grants

DigitalES has set up an informative website where you can find a list of the different UNICO programs, the calls for public grants already launched or planned, and the deadlines for submitting applications.
