INTERVIEW: Eduardo Esteves (Qualcomm), or the strengths of Spanish talent to build the metaverse

CRACKS of technology’ is a weekly series of interviews, through which we want to give voice to those IT professionals who are absolute geniuses of technology in Spain. We want to hear from them, to know and recognize the work they do in these companies; to know what they are passionate about and what advice they have for those who will come after them.

As the culmination of the series ‘Cracks of technology’ we have Eduardo Esteves, one of the heavyweights of Qualcomm at international level, who has recently been entrusted with the responsibility of engineering from the Spanish subsidiary. As Global Vice President of Engineering, Esteves brings us an authoritative view on the quality of technology talent in different corners of the world.

Fascinated by the metaverse and the opportunities that the so-called ‘Web 3.0’ will bring us, he assures that Spain has the ideal pool of specialists to climb positions as an international development hub.

Q.- In your words, what is the metaverse and what form do you think it will take?

A.- The metaverse will emerge from a more natural integration between the online and offline worlds. How it will be is still a mystery, because it will depend on which companies manage to impose themselves and, with them, their vision of how these new experiences should be made tangible.

In my opinion, there will be a single metaverse, just as today there is only one Internet. Within this, however, we will find different services and applications and we are confident that Qualcomm will play a relevant role in this emerging market.

We have been working on extended reality for many years, fifteen years since we started R&D in this area, and today we are able to offer very efficient processing technologies, especially for small devices. This expertise gives us a competitive advantage over the future metaverse, because it will most likely rely on small devices such as smart glasses, virtual reality headsets and, of course, smartphones.

“The metaverse will be supported by equipment such as smart glasses, virtual reality headsets and smartphones.”

Q.- What kind of technologies are you developing for the emerging metaverse?

A.- Hardware, of course, but also computing algorithms, i.e. software. We have recently opened the Snapdragon Spaces XR platform, precisely so that developers around the world can have access to these algorithms and, on top of them, create new applications and extended reality experiences.

In short, Qualcomm wants to remain a key enabler for creators to imagine and develop the digital services of the future, just as it did with mobile technology.

Q.- Do you dare to imagine what kind of applications will exist in a few years?

A.- Impossible! Look at the number of applications we use every day on our smartphones that would have been unimaginable twenty years ago. Yes, I would dare to predict a take-off of what we call “spatial computing”, which consists of combining on and offline experiences through technology. A clear example is smart glasses, which we wear on the physical plane and complement our senses with projections of digital information. Vice versa, virtual reality brings to the digital world experiences that exist in the physical environment.

This is very complex, because it requires a very deep understanding of what actions and movements are natural, efficient or intuitive for people. In some cases, these actions will be learned – for example, to turn on the light we press a switch – and other times they will be innate.

qualcomm

Eduardo Esteves, VP Engineering at Qualcomm.

Q.- What kind of professional profiles, apart from purely IT personnel, will the construction of space computing require?

A.- Indeed, building new valuable and creative experiences where on- and offline environments merge requires an understanding of human behavior. People differ from machines in that we have an understanding of the world around us, of the context of things, of how people interact and how we perceive things. Teaching that context to artificial intelligence represents an immense challenge that cognitive science is trying to address and that leads us to seek more and more talent and collaborations in this area.

Don’t think we’re talking science fiction: many of these technologies are just around the corner.

“Building valuable and creative new experiences where on- and offline environments merge requires an understanding of human behavior.”

Q.- Undoubtedly, technology is advancing at a great speed.

A.- So much so that in many cases technology is ahead of people’s needs. I have been working at Qualcomm for 25 years and, in this time, I have been able to experience first-hand the construction of the mobile Internet. Back then, I remember that people didn’t see the point of carrying a small computer in your pocket. I have the feeling that we are living through an inflection point very similar to that one, which in this case will precede the explosion of space computing and the metaverse.

Personally, I feel very fortunate to work in this sector, particularly in a company that is so strongly committed to R&D; I believe we are living in fascinating times in which digital technology is changing the world. Over the past two years, technology has helped us cope with the pandemic and get on with our lives during periods of confinement. This is just one example of the benefits that technology can bring to all of us.

Q.- Qualcomm, a company that invests heavily in long-term innovation and plays an important role in the global semiconductor business, is increasing its presence in Spain. Is that a good indication of the future of our country?

A.- It is a very good sign, without any doubt. At Qualcomm we have engineering teams in Spain and they are very good, at least in the extended reality areas, which are the ones I touch more directly. There are very good graphic designers, specialists in computer vision systems and artificial intelligence, among them software engineers with experience in the video game industry, robotics or navigation systems.

Therefore, we will continue to hire personnel for the Madrid offices, but also Spanish talent to work remotely for different locations of the company.

Q.- Do you believe that Spain can actively participate in the construction of the future metaverse?

A.- Technology is built where there is talent. If we think of the metaverse as a great evolution of the Internet, and not exclusively as a series of applications where you interact with an avatar that looks like you, we realize that the opportunities are immense.

In my opinion, beyond avatars, I believe that the great terrain to be explored and exploited lies in the application of augmented reality to many areas of our lives. Time will tell. What I do know is that the applications of the metaverse that will be most successful will be those that are useful to people; that will be the decisive element. Qualcomm has launched a contest to gather ideas from developers, Snapdragon Spaces Pathfinder program, with the idea of co-funding and supporting the best projects. I know that some Spanish developers have participated, but we would like to encourage many more to do so.

INTERVIEW: Isabel Enriquez (Onivia) or how to make operational excellence in IT your greatest asset

CRACKS of technology’ is a weekly series of interviews, through which we want to give voice to those IT professionals who are absolute geniuses of technology in Spain. We want to hear from them, to know and recognize the work they do in these companies; to know what they are passionate about and what advice they have for those who will come after them.

After almost 18 years working in a large company in the sector, and being considered one of the great experts in IT systems and operations in Spain, in April 2022 Isabel Enríquez decided to embark on a new stage as chief information officer of the wholesale operator Onivia.

Today he welcomes DigitalES just as he has taken on his new responsibilities: with a big smile. In this conversation we will meet a woman with clear ideas, a perfectionist and proud to embody the coveted strategic role of the CIO in companies.

Q.- Did you feel vertigo at the time of changing jobs, after such a long time?

A.- Of course! It is inevitable, especially, as in my case, if you feel happy in a company. However, starting over is also stimulating. Onivia is an extremely young company [2019] which has already become a key player on the board, in a telco sector that is particularly cutting-edge and dynamic.

I suppose that the illusion and the stimulus of joining a management team that gave me full confidence outweighed the fear.

Q.- You have spent your whole professional life in the telco sector, although this is your first incursion in a neutral operator that is also a start-up. To what extent has it been a shock?

A.- I confess that during the first few weeks I had a hard time understanding the concept of a neutral and independent operator, but today I have not only come to understand it, but I value it highly because I believe it offers incalculable value to ISPs of all sizes, and indirectly to the economy that is built around it.

As for Onivia as a start-up, I was looking forward to working in such an environment. There is an energy in the air that makes hard work very rewarding.

Q.- Tell us about what you find most stimulating about your role as CIO of Onivia.

A.- One of the things that attracted me most to Onivia was the freedom to shape my own role as CIO. Thus, on the one hand, it is about IT accompanying the company in its growth, ensuring that the systems provide the necessary support to all business processes. Achieving business objectives is a team effort, Onivia has the prospect of continuing to grow very fast and IT will try to contribute to this as much as possible.

On the other hand, the CIO is responsible for ensuring that the operations linked to information systems are efficient and function correctly. And here I want to put a lot of focus on the management of operations with customers. I intend to put into practice the concept of ‘operational excellence’ that has been talked about for so long and that I believe will be a strategic differentiator for Onivia.

Q.- In what sense?

A.- Onivia is growing very fast, among other reasons, because it has been able to break down the entry barriers of smaller ISPs to a neutral operator’s network. We offer an onboarding process whereby an operator can be marketing our services within 4 to 6 weeks, without the need for large upfront investments, and we can offer this only by being extremely efficient in operations. My obsession is to continue improving that operational excellence through a personalized review of the management we develop with each of our clients, obsession for detail and absolute focus on our clients, our ISPs.

Q.- Earlier you mentioned the management team as one of the company’s strengths.

A.- For me, a job is not only interesting because of what you are going to do, but also because of how you are going to be able to work. From this perspective, I knew the Onivia management committee from past lives so, in a way, I could sense what the working dynamics were going to be and I felt very comfortable with them.

onivia

Q.- We recently learned the latest data on broadband capillarity in Spain. What is your assessment of the situation?

A.- The data show that 91% of Spanish households already have access to the fiber network, which puts us at the forefront in Europe, but we cannot forget the remaining 9%. For many small towns and rural areas, digitization is absolutely essential, not only to reach people, but also as an economic driver. I experienced this first-hand in my hometown, Baltanás (Palencia), and now I see it every day in my work.

The percentage that remains to be covered is the most difficult, although it is not impossible. We will probably have to resort to a complementarity of the fixed network and the 5G network. However, it is important that we focus not only on continuing to expand coverage, but also on ensuring that it is of high quality. We will have to keep an eye on how technologies such as WiFi6 and XGSPON evolve and how they can help us to further improve quality, speed, data capacity…

“Ninety-one percent of Spanish households already have access to the fiber network, which puts us at the top in Europe, but we cannot forget the remaining 9%”

Q.- Is Spain losing its competitive advantage in telecommunications and where do you think we need to step on the accelerator?

A.- At the moment we are still the leader, but there are nuances. We are number one in fiber deployment, although we are ahead of other European countries in terms of network fill (i.e. penetration and accessibility). In short, it is one thing for fiber to reach a town and another for all citizens and SMEs in the town to contract fiber services and start using it. I think these are challenges that need to be addressed in parallel, without forgetting the usage aspect.

Q.- Let’s talk about the technological trends you observe in the telco sector. Which do you think are the most outstanding and which do you think have the greatest applicability in the business?

A.- There is a lot of effervescent innovation at the moment. Blockchain, for example, is a trend that will arrive but offers few use cases for telcos, at least for now. In IoT there are interesting projects for diversification towards, for example, geolocation of devices and vehicles.

But, among the emerging technologies of the moment, I would highlight artificial intelligence and its applicability in bots of all kinds. It must be taken into account that telcos handle millions of customers: therefore, the segmentation and load reduction that bots allow greatly help to improve the quality of service.

Secondly, all those technologies aimed at streamlining business operations stand out. This is the case of virtualization (due to the reduction of physical assets), cloud (due to the flexibility and scalability it provides) and edge computing (due to the optimization of data processing and securitization).

And finally, I would say that cybersecurity has been an extremely critical process for telcos for years, and will continue to be. Anticipating and continuously monitoring systems is now part of everyday life for all companies in the industry.

Q.- You are not lacking in challenges!

A.- And don’t let them fail! At Onivia we literally face new challenges every day. In the end, that’s what gets you hooked on the telecommunications sector. Once you get to know it, it grabs you.

INTERVIEW: Antonio Conde (Cisco Systems), the inspiring experience of a telework veteran

CRACKS of technology’ is a weekly series of interviews, through which we want to give voice to those IT professionals who are absolute geniuses of technology in Spain. We want to hear from them, to know and recognize the work they do in these companies; to know what they are passionate about and what advice they have for those who will come after them.

Antonio Conde is one of the most recognized Spanish executives at Cisco Systems. After twenty years at the technology giant, he now combines the hats of chief innovation officer, digitalization program leader and Next Generation EU fund manager.

The reader may know that, of Cisco’ s eight innovation centers around the world, one of them is located in Spain, specifically in Barcelona. In this context, Cisco is piloting from Barcelona a number of initiatives that will contribute decisively to make Spain a great hub of technological innovation for the whole of Europe.

Curiously, the person responsible for all this activity has never had to move from his home in Seville. A teleworker for more than two decades, today we asked him about his work, his experience working remotely and how he sees the technological future of Spain.

Q.- Tell us about the innovation center in Barcelona and what will be the pillars of your activity in the near future.

A.- The Barcelona team was one of the first in the entire group to have holography equipment, augmented reality… It is a center that has historically been dedicated to innovation that was two steps ahead of the current product line, but we are progressively completing that strategic line with short and medium-term innovation, so that customers can make proofs of concept and development combining emerging and current technologies.

Looking ahead to the coming months, I would say that many of our efforts will be focused on three main objectives: active participation in the PERTE Chip, which is part of the European semiconductor strategy; technological innovation aimed at sustainability and ecological transition; and catalyzing an urban innovation ecosystem around Barcelona’s 22@ district.

Q.- What opportunities do you identify in these areas?

A.- Clearly, we see a great opportunity in sustainable tourism and in how to apply technology to tourist destinations. We have very interesting projects in this area. For example, during Holy Week in Seville we applied technologies such as video surveillance cameras, intelligent street lamps, monitoring of traffic cameras or people counting to avoid the crowds that used to occur during the Holy Week. madrugá.

Another of our priorities is quantum technologies, both hardware and software, on which many universities in Spain are working.

We are also putting a lot of focus on the digitization of the ports. It is a powerful industry and Spain has infrastructures that can become a model for other countries. All of this, enabled or accelerated by 5G technology.

Q.- As a direct witness of the technological revolution, your own work at Cisco has changed completely in the last few years. What is it that stimulates you most about this constant change?

A.- I joined Cisco Systems Spain in August 2000, as a highly specialized technician. At that time, there was a high demand for people skilled in access and voice over IP technologies. I was fortunate enough to experience the liberalization of the telecommunications sector first-hand, then to move into business development and, finally, to enter fully into the areas of digitalization and innovation.

To your question, what stimulates me the most? I never get bored! In this company you can go wherever you want. If that’s what you want, this company makes it easy for you to move and find new challenges.

cisco

Q.- Cisco allowed you to telework from day one. That was 22 years ago. On the other hand, most organizations have made the leap to remote work during the pandemic. What is your opinion of the way in which other companies are adopting these work formulas?

A.- At first we felt ratified, because we at Cisco have been promoting the advantages of teleworking for decades. The pandemic has shown that it is possible to work differently, with greater flexibility, thanks to technology.

However, we have been somewhat surprised that many organizations wanted to move from on-site to teleworking without accompanying this transition with a review of the organizational and leadership model. Teleworking is a brutal change in terms of combining professional and personal life that you have to know how to anticipate and manage.

“The pandemic has shown that it is possible to work in a different way, with greater flexibility, thanks to technology.”

Q.- Despite these challenges, do you believe that hybrid work is here to stay?

A.- Without any doubt. Even in those places where there was reluctance to adopt teleworking, due to fears related to productivity, absenteeism or control of the productive force, people have perceived that these problems can be controlled and that the final result more than compensates.

In a flexible work model, each person takes advantage of the times of the day when he or she is most productive to work. Therefore, the trend is to reorganize physical spaces to adapt to this new way of understanding the workplace, seeking to provide services that make it attractive for employees to come to the office.

Q.- In your case, since you have been teleworking for more than twenty years, what value do you think physical offices have?

A.- As is logical, in the last two years I have traveled much less to Madrid and Barcelona, although we are already recovering the pre-pandemic rhythm. That means traveling several times a month, because there are services or aspects related to human interaction that are still difficult to replace. It is about giving workers the freedom to deploy the skills for which you hired them and, at the same time, to maintain a point of personal synchronization with your team on a regular basis, establishing face-to-face attendance for certain meetings. Telework cannot be all or nothing.

In this context, physical spaces at Cisco are evolving to give greater prominence to open spaces, meeting rooms and the installation of large screens for multipoint teleworking.

“It’s about giving workers the freedom to deploy the skills for which you hired them and, at the same time, to maintain a point of personal synchronization with the team on a regular basis.”

Q.- The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of cybersecurity.

A.- Of course, in a teleworking environment it is crucial to take care of the security of access to work applications, so that operating remotely is as secure as doing so from the corporate network.

The technology already exists. At Cisco we offer solutions to secure the identity of the user and the device, to ensure that the person is who they say they are and that they are using the equipment they should be. In fact, we work with universities in Spain that have patents on device fingerprinting. We also participate in projects in the healthcare field that demonstrate that federated knowledge can be obtained from an artificial intelligence, without the need to extract the data from the network in which it is stored.

Q.- How has cybersecurity evolved around Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), from a technological point of view?

A.- In the past, the way to protect devices outside the corporate network was to generate a tunnel (VPN) to connect both. However, as the company’s perimeter grew, so did the difficulties – and costs – of managing the number of VPNs.

Today, a trust and certification policy is generated between the device, the user and the corporate network. In other words, it is a matter of identifying the person and the team, and checking that there is no dissonance in traffic patterns. In this way, any attempt to access unauthorized applications and data can be detected, requiring much less processing power.

Q.- Are you one of those who believe that quantum computing will put all cybersecurity systems in check?

A.- We know that current encryption algorithms are not secure against quantum computing. What can take a normal computer 300 years to decrypt, a quantum computer can decrypt in 2.5 hours.

That is why we have been trying to prevent this threat for years, working on post-quantum encryption algorithms. At the European Union level, there are already three finalist algorithms and it is possible that the choice of the algorithm that will set the future industry standard will be accelerated compared to the initial target date of 2024.

In short, technology will continue to evolve, challenges will continue to arise and, once again, technology itself will be able to meet them. I can’t think of a more fascinating industry to work in.

“Technology is going to continue to evolve, challenges are going to continue to emerge and, again, technology itself will be able to meet them. I can’t think of a more fascinating sector to work in.”

P.- ¡Por algo hemos querido entrevistarte!

nokia

Fuente: https://www.nokia.com/about-us/company/our-history/

INTERVIEW: Agustín Pozo (Nokia), the “bridge” to a successful digital transformation

CRACKS of technology’ is a weekly series of interviews, through which we want to give voice to those IT professionals who are absolute geniuses of technology in Spain. We want to hear from them, to know and recognize the work they do in these companies; to know what they are passionate about and what advice they have for those who will come after them.

In digital transformation, perhaps the most difficult part is moving from theory to practice or, as the wise saying goes, from the muses to the theater. Where do I start, what technologies do I really need, what steps do I need to coordinate for the transformation plan to be effective?

Today we talk to Agustín Pozo, from Nokia, about how to tackle the great challenge of the technological revolution. This Spaniard leads the Digital Transformation unit of this multinational, which has become one of the world’s largest providers of communications technologies…, and one of the leading players in digital transformation projects at national and international level.

Read on, because there’s nothing left of the Nokia that used to make commercial cell phones…

Q.- If this interview were a digital transformation project, where do you think we should start talking?

A.- I would suggest starting with the first major requirement, and that great forgotten one in every digital journey: the lack of integral vision. According to McKinsey, 60% to 70% of projects fail due to lack of vision. It is essential to define well the integral vision because from it we will draw, point by point, the digital transformation journey.

It all starts by asking yourself a question: what is your objective in three years’ time? do you want to be a leader in this segment? do you want to enter a new line of business? do you need to enter another country? do you want to reach a new customer profile? do you need to stop the talent drain? what are your current problems to be solved? do you have a new business line? do you have a new business line? quick wins that you would like to launch to generate internal traction and external visibility…

Q.- And then?

Based on well-defined objectives, the success of projects has a lot to do with the alignment of all managers. At the end of the day, the digital transformation strategy to be defined should impact not only on Technology (CIO/CTO), but mainly on the Strategy and Business department, on the Human Resources department, on Purchasing and Sales, on Marketing, Communication ….. In addition, the person in charge of Digitalization -if there is one- usually occupies the same level in the hierarchy as the directors of all these departments, which can sometimes generate a lack of speed due to differences of opinion among equals, which does not favor agility and commitment to the design of a complete Digital Transformation strategy, which touches all the necessary areas, and its launch and implementation. Each of these different phases has its intrinsic complications, hence the commitment of all involved is key, and to the very end.

That is why it is essential to have the support of a leader and that the entire steering committee – or the Council of Ministers, if we are talking about a government – acts as a unit. In these cases, I usually recommend the creation of an “A-Team”, which led by the CEO of the company (president or responsible minister, in case of a government) as the maximum internal sponsor, has the key profiles of its Management Committee in said maximum team responsible for the definition and execution of its digital transformation strategy.

Q.- Tell us about your responsibility at Nokia. We know that some time ago you were nicknamed “The Bridge”?

A.- (laughs) Yes, it is true. I think it is the result of my more than twenty years working out of the box. The truth is that it generates in me a mixed feeling of flattery and pride, but above all, of great responsibility. My fundamental work consists of acting as a great “trust Advisor” for Management Committees in multinationals and governments.

A very important part of my job is to collect and analyze the short and long term problems of our clients. To this end, we hold various meetings, sessions and workshops with different members of a Management Committee. In these sessions, as they share with me their difficulties, intentions or objectives (always business and social) I put on the table the different types of technologies, existing solutions and technological disruptions that would be more aligned to overcome these current difficulties and achieve their future goals.

The idea is to outline a specific technological roadmap for each client or government, defined on the basis of their needs, whether they are to transform a traditional business model into an exponential one or to generate jobs or attract foreign investment, in the case of governments.

On the other hand, with the information exchanged and analyzed about needs and objectives, I take care of designing, presenting and directing the execution of your digital transformation journey. An absolutely turnkey path, formed by different technological projects, ordered, and designed to be the main strategic asset (along with people) to support your specific needs of digital business transformation and your vision of the future.

Agustín Pozo.

It is a ‘Top – Down’ job: we collect strategic objectives from the Presidency or the Management Committee, and we land the journeys. in “end-to-end” plans that involve everything from technology to people, their training, innovation, etc.). We also help each of the members of the steering committee – or ministers – to determine where the focus should be, so that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. For example, an HR director should consider whether his or her focus should be on reducing the average age of the workforce, or on providing social benefits to senior staff, or on creating re-skilling and personal development plans, etc.

In short, yes, we are a “bridge” between a Management Committee and their needs for the future digital transformation of their business or the government of a country and its Digital Agenda, and the technology they will require to successfully transform and achieve their future goals.

Q.- Do you keep the nickname?

A.- Now they call me “the gargoyle”! It comes from my dear colleagues in Latin America, who usually, in their afternoon schedule (-6h or -8h difference with the schedule here in Spain, being here already in the early morning) still see me “connected and in green” in the internal tools due to the different sessions with clients there… The gargoyle that takes care of them from Spain day and night, they tell me 😉.

Q.- As a profession, do you find it rewarding?

A.- I am very fortunate. I travel all over the world to meet with very interesting people, top level and great experts in strategy, multinational management or ministers committed to the social and economic development of their countries, whom I try to help through technology. These leaders trust me and contact us to talk about what technology can do for them and how to articulate everything so that these technologies generate the desired impact, thus having the opportunity to work with them, and land together their strategic roadmap, based on technology, for the transformation of their businesses or societies, through the signing of strategic agreements and contracts for several years of collaboration.

Moreover, there is no such thing as routine in this job. Each project is different because the cultures of the organizations or countries are also different. And what can we say about the variety of available and constantly evolving technologies? We have different social projects in Latin America, for example, whose ultimate goal is to transform countries and their societies, improve the lives of all people, and develop the regional GDP through the generation of employment and the attraction of international investment.

We are leading entire social transformations through the strategic definition of a comprehensive digital transformation journey for governments such as El Salvador and Peru, among many others. by illuminating with our global leadership in next-generation LTE and 5G networks (let’s not forget that Nokia is, today, the only company with a 5G network presence in five continents) to reduce the digital divide in these countries. Or the more than 450 private LTE networks that Nokia has delivered to support the Digital Transformation of multinationals towards Industry 4.0?

What more could I ask for?

Q.- We wanted to interview you for a reason!

A.- I can only be grateful to have had the opportunity to learn so many things from top profiles in different subjects and countries. From having had the opportunity to work side by side with top executives of global multinationals and governments in more than thirty countries. To have the opportunity to work directly for the top executives of our company, to learn from all their experience and knowledge, and to be able to repay their trust through the creation of the new projects, partnerships and long-term contracts that we are signing as a result of the work that I am honored, and proud, to lead at Nokia today.

And why not to say it, from the utmost humility: grateful and overwhelmed equally for having received different international awards and Market recognitions, such as: Award for the Best Digital Transformation Project by the EOA (Europe Outsourcing Association) in 2011, having been chosen as one of the Top Most Influential Digital Leaders in Spain in 2021, chosen through the analysis of an external company in Israel as Top 10 Speakers at DES2021 (Digital Enterprise Show, leading global event in new business strategies and digital transformation for Enterprises), having been selected several years as a Mentor in Promociona, being selected as Opening Session Keynote Speaker at the Global IA Summit in Berlin in 2019, of the Global Marketing Summit in Israel in 2018 or having received the Confidence of entire governments that are signing the Digital Transformation Strategies that I have developed and presented them …to name a few, as well as different internal awards at Nokia.

I can only be grateful, and looking forward to giving back to the market everything I have received from it for more than twenty years.

Q.- You are a very restless and sociable person, it could be said that you break with the stereotype of the IT professional. What profile do you think is required to do this work of ‘bridge’ between political or business leaders and technologists?

A.- A very versatile profile, with experience in different environments and with good soft skills. It is about being able to talk, in a climate of trust, with presidents of governments, ministers and CEOs of companies, but also with middle management, IT or technology managers, and with experts in very specific tools. For that, I think you have to know and have experience in both business strategy and the execution of technology projects, and have the ability to see things as a whole, apart from mastering different registers, from technology to business, and intensities, from high-level strategy to detail of the plan to be executed. I’m telling you, it’s exciting. I am not bored at all!

In my case, I am an economist and MBA by training. During the last year of my degree I did an internship at the Internet portal ‘Canal 21’, where I had the opportunity to see what is behind online communications, and I fell in love. When I finished my studies I set up several technology start-ups to finally take the step to the multinational. So I have been leading the digital transformation of business for more than two decades, working from the technology world.

Q.- What is left of that young ‘startapero’?

R.-. From my beginnings where we lived in a constant maelstrom, launching new technology-based services to cover different business needs of our clients on a monthly basis, it imprinted in me a certain way of working. Maybe that’s why I try to make the most of every hour of the day, working “following the sun” to cover schedules and clients, from Asia, EMEA and America, without defined working days, to try to reach more places, connect with more people and evangelize in all possible events about the opportunities that technology opens up for us. I hope I never lose that start-up “hunger”.

Q.- With respect to the continuous training required to engage in digital transformation, what would you suggest?

A.- It is essential to be up to date. That is why, in the last six or seven years I have taken postgraduate training in innovation and digital transformation at IE Business School (2014/2015) and another postgraduate course on Artificial Intelligence at MBIT (2018/2019); it is always important to have good training to add to your experience, to update and enrich yourself to keep growing. In this regard, let me share that I am a fervent believer in “learnt-ability” (the need and continuous commitment to your training and growth) as one of the The most important digital skills to cultivate in the daily lives of all of us.

I also give classes to students in different business schools, both in Spain and Latin America, to whom I logically talk a lot about Nokia

Q.- And what do you tell them?

A.- Many people don’t know that Nokia started out selling paper. Then he made boots, tires and even bullets during the war. Then came TVs, cell phones, networks… and now we are leading the way in next-generation communications around the world; 5G, LTE, etc.

Throughout its 157-year history, Nokia has reinvented itself “n” times. It has bought and integrated businesses, has spun off others, has had to undertake reorganizations…, and is still there, as a real benchmark in digital transformation. In addition, although there are many ways to do business and survive in the market, it does so by following ethical values, being recognized, for the fourth consecutive year, as one of the 100 Most Ethical Companies on the Planet. In my opinion, this is very commendable.

Q.- Technologically speaking, what differential value do you think Nokia currently offers?

A.- In terms of innovation, let’s not forget that Nokia’ s Bell Labs have invented many of the pillars of communications in the world – fiber optics, lasers, cellular communications, the first satellite communications, radio waves… -. No less than nine Nobel laureates have passed through there. I am not exaggerating when I say that at Nokia we are currently developing some of the best technologies in the world in fields such as 5G, LTE or Virtual Private Networks, critical infrastructure communications and telepresence. I firmly believe this. We offer an end-to-end communications portfolio, being the only company with an integrated portfolio of fixed and mobile access, with commercial presence in the five continents.

Of course, in other technological areas our portfolio is limited and within an open journey of digital transformation we will have to resort to third-party solutions. ¿Y? In fact, I believe that another of our differential values is that we do not limit ourselves to sending our commercial catalog, but we design complete journeys in which we detail all the steps to be taken and we schedule all the technologies that should be integrated, whether they are ours or from another company. The technology sector has internalized coopetition (collaboration + competition) better than anyone else and, particularly at Nokia, we know that the best results are achieved by acting as an ecosystem.

For Nokia, on the other hand, the commitment to digitalization projects brings significant value because it allows us to move from acting as a “network supplier” to being recognized as the “strategic partner for Digital Transformation” of our customers. All this enables our company to open new strategic business in multi-year agreements with these customers. A clear win-win, I would say.

Q.- What advice would you like to pass on to young people who are thinking of developing their career in the ICT sector?

A.- That technology is key to the development and future of any company and government. To accelerate its transformation and to be able to address new businesses and models, to develop and implement exponential growth tools, both business and social.

Have fun with it. They should not see it as a “job in itself”, but as a wonderful opportunity to work in a sector as important and changing as this one, which leads (and will lead) our future. All of us.

Oh, and don’t forget that technology is the most important enabler, along with people, for all these transformations and future models, so don’t be misled into thinking that technology “is the customer’s goal”, but “only” its enabler to achieve those goals. That is why I suggest you enrich your technological training with other subjects such as Strategy, Business Models, Innovation, People, etc., to be able, in the future, to interact with different types of executives and profiles.

Q.- We are aware of your involvement with diversity in the ICT industry, as vice-president of EJE&CON (Spanish Association of Female Executives and Board Members). Do you have any final advice for young boys and girls reading this interview, regarding gender equality?

A.- EJE&CON is a leading and very inspiring association in Spain. It is full of top executive women (+1,200 IBEX35 members, and some men too!) who selflessly dedicate their available time to fight for the development of genderless and generation-free talent, through different activities, programs, forums, trainings, etc. It is a great pride, and responsibility, to have had the opportunity to have been elected as the new Vice President of Digital Innovation and a member of its Board of Directors in 2021.

So, as a final message, I would like to emphasize EJE&CON’s commitment to the development of women in the technological field and in management committees, in order to contribute to catalyze a cultural change where we all have a place. I firmly believe, and I hope the young men and women agree with me, that gender synergies are fundamental for the development of the socio-economic space, competitiveness and the generation of benefits at all levels.
